 "In this painting we are looking at work that has had a very long shelf life. Beer, a very popular product across most of the world for centuries, has to be delivered and in the United Kingdom the drayman is/was a very important link in this chain. Obviously the mode of transport changes with time and this particular painting illustrates the drayman at work in Lincoln 1890. The background to this painting is Saltergate. I looked at three Victorian photos of Saltergate at this time and they showed a somewhat narrower road than it is today, especially at its junction with the High Street. The background to the painting depicts this and some of the business premises names are familiar i.e. Jackson Cleaners and Dryers, the Falcon Inn and C. Pratt and Sons (Pratt's Still is there even now). The Drayman is my interpretation of what it might have looked like at that time. Apparently there is/was an underground tunnel running under all the premises on the side of the road where the Still is, what its use was can only be a matter of speculation. Perhaps it was storage space or a discrete thoroughfare to travel unseen or used by the business for some reason. We can only wonder."
