Part of the Historic Lincoln Collection - Graham Chalmers, 'The Story Behind The Painting',

"This painting shows the central railway crossing on the High Street, Lincoln circa 1900. The detail in this painting shows that even then, over 100 years ago, the traffic problem at this particular point in the High Street was present, albeit in its infancy. Wigford Way didn't exist so the High Street was continuous to the Stonebow and when one looks at the photographs of that period, the quality of some of the buildings is quite obvious. Luckily many of them are still present but time has taken its toll together with modernisation. The figures show are varied, some are from the original source whilst others are from my imagination of the scene, including the weather. This snapshot of daily life as it was then compared to as it is now reflects a continuity that appeals to me and inspired the creation of this view."

The original source photograph for this painting was used with permission of Lincolnshire Archives and can be viewed at Lincoln Central Library.
